I Must Be Crazy...Or An Amish Wanna-Be

I have this great friend. She has let me borrow so many Amish books by Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter that it seems as if I have a non-ending supply of them. We've been trading books back and forth for over a month now...and we still have a lot of books to trade back and forth.
I've always liked Beverly Lewis and her Amish fictions, but we only had like 3 of them; two of them being the last two in a series, so I've never read much of her books. We have a 3-in-1 Wanda Brunstetter book, too, and I loved it. But, I never bought any more.
Becky, my friend, strictly likes Amish fiction. So, she has a lot of them. And she's got me hooked.
I still love my fantasies, historical fictions, and suspence novels, but Amish fiction has my attention now.
In the last month, Becs and I have traded more than 15 books, probably. All of the ones she's giving me are either Beverly Lewis or Wanda Brunstetter. They're really good. And I'm reading them practically around the clock.
If you've read any Amish books or researched the Amish culture at all you'll realize that they speak two different languages - English and Pennslyvania Dutch. They also know German, but they speak Pennslyvania Dutch and English. English when they're around us Englischers, and Pennsylvania Dutch at home. Or, if you read fiction books about them, a mix.
"Jah. It's a wunderabaar-gut day today, ain't so?"
I'm starting to speak they're language. I've always liked it and every once and a while would say "Danke" instead of "Thank you", but now it's becoming habit...and without me really realizing it, too.
The other night we were on our way back from a ball we went to when we got on the subject of where I wanted to get married. Don't ask me how we got on the subject for I don't remember exactly, but it probably started with one of my dad's clever jokes. Anyway, I mentioned that I wanted to get married in a large field out in the middle of no where. Gabe perks up and says "Kait, you can get married in my field!"
"Gabe," I replied jokingly to my 8 year old brother. "By the time you have your own field I'll be like 27. I will be an old Maidel if I'm not married by then."
Silence. Then my mom broke out laughing.
Maidel?
The Dutch term for "maid".

That's not all. I've started writing "Jah" instead of "Yeah". Jah, another Dutch word.

And then there's "Danke, Danki, or Denki"(pronounced dawnka, daynkey, or denkey). Which one you say depends on what Amish county you live in, but I say the first one. I almost said that to the waitress at Waffle House this morning. That would have really confused her.
And "Wunderbaar-gut" (pronounced wunderbar goot) which means "Wonderful good.

I say other words, like the occasional "Mudder" and "Daed" which obviously are "Mother" and "Father".
And I say phrases that they use. Like..."It's really rainy today, ain't so?" and "Maybe could be".

I've mentioned to my mother that I would love to become New Order Amish.(Their beliefs are closer to mine) I would, too. Their way of living fascinates me, and hopefully one day I'll be able to visit an Amish community.

Jah, that would be wunderbaar-gut fun.

Am I crazy, or am I just an Amish wanna-be?

Something Funny

Last night we went to some good friends of ours house for dinner.  They have 3 kids; Victoria, Spencer, and Andrew. Victoria and Spencer are closer to my age(Victoria's 2 years older, Spencer's a year and a half younger), and Andrew is in between Joe and Gabe's age. They're family is totally awesome, and you can't not smile while in their presence.
Dinner was great.
After Victoria tried to kill me and Spencer devoured some stationary we played Life. I landed on the "Get Married!" spot of the game. Victoria asked me what I wanted to name him. "Johnathan Marcus" I replied. "I'll call him John, but not Johnny."
Victoria just smiled at me, but that wasn't strange; she smiles all the time.
But Spencer gave me this really strange look.
"What?" I innocently asked.
He kept on giving me that look. Then I realized it.
Duh, I thought to myself. Their dad's name is Jonathan, and he's called Jonny for short.
Truth was, I've been planning to name one of my kids Johnathan Marcus, in the future of course, for a while now. I've liked the name Johnathan since I read one of Janette Oke's books where one of the main characters was named Jonathan, which was years ago. And the other day I happened to be joking with my mom about how they would be the crazy grandparents who would call my kids nicknames I don't like. Like if I named my kid Johnathan they'd call him Johnny instead of John. (it was just an example; I have nothing against the name Johnny)
Victoria and Spencer didn't know that.
Oh well.
We continued playing and soon enough I landed on a "Adopt Twins" spot. I decided to get a girl and a boy.
"Okay, Kait. What are their names?" Victoria asked once again.
"The girl is Coraline Marie, and the boy is William Christian." I answered.
Another strange look from Spencer.
This time I was a a little quicker to link 2 and 2.
Oh double-duh, Spencer's middle name is Christian. I realized.
Another name I've always liked, but never really liked as a first name so I set it aside for a middle name.
It just keeps getting better.
...

I must look like a name thief.

What can I help it if their family has such great names?

I never did explain the sillyness of it, for I was laughing too much to say it.

They probably think I'm crazy. And hey; perhaps I truly am.

Slidey Slide? - Part 2 of the "Adventures With The Graham Crackers"

We're sitting in the Graham Crackers trailer. The sun has finally come out after the 2 hours of rain. I'm playing with Pops, Mom and Mrs. Graham Cracker are talking about kids or something, my dad's laughing at something Mr. Graham Cracker said. All the kids are outside, except for me and the babies. Sam's taking a nap.

Sis walks in and asks to put on her bathing suit.
"What? No" Mrs. Graham Cracker says to her daughter. Then asks, "Whhyyy?"

"Because the guys are playing Slidey Slide, and and I don't want to get my clothes wet."
"Slidey Slide?"
"Yeah. And I don't want to get my clothes all wet and muddy like theirs"

Silence.

"This sounds like a picture moment, Kait" Mrs. Graham Cracker says to me.

I agree. I grabbed my camera off the Graham Crackers counter, and follow her out the trailer door, wondering what nonsense my brothers and their friends were up to now.

We go down the small hill to where the lake meets their back yard and look down the lake's shore. This is what we see.

Yeah. Wow. Apparently Slidey Slide translated is: Slide down this nasty slimy mud hill into the fish-poop-filled, littered lake. I wonder how much they accidentally drank? Ick.

When we got there they were just in the mud, getting their feet wet a little as the slid down. Then things got really messy. It's funny; you'd think they'd do the worse while the parents weren't looking, but with them it was just the opposite! They didn't start actually getting into the water until after we showed up.

/

They were a mess.

Bud came around and saw what was going on. He very carefully slid down down the hill, put his foot in the water and tip-toed out. At least he tried to.

Beebo tackled him full-force, though you can't tell from the pictures.

They were all having a great time. It was funny to watch them tackle each other. :)
Mother got some video of them, I think. I should find out. Maybe I'll put it in the video!

In the end we had to hose them off. Pops was peeking out the window saying hi.

And Guys found this frog, who was named Murdock.

It was an awesome day.

A Forever Long Post About My Birds & Squirrels

Okay, here we go. At least there are pictures to keep you occupied during this post. It's more for me to remember the neat animals I saw here, but I thought you guys might enjoy it, too.

Some friends of ours gave us a bird feeder and I hung it on a tree in our backyard. It's in a perfect spot because it's viewable from our kitchen window and from our backdoor, so I can watch it easily. To my surprise, it's been a big hit, and we have had a purple finch, a female and a male red cardinals, some sort of wren or finch, and a chickadee, which I spotted just this morning. I have pictures of most, but not all. Most of the pictures were taken threw the window, so they aren't the best quality. The house sparrows and Sheila, surprisingly, were the only ones who would let me got outside. I think that once you see Sheila you'll be surprised she let me take pictures of her, too. Here are the ones I have.

This is Phoenix. She is a female red cardinal. You can tell she is female by the color of her feathers. A male cardinal has extremely little to no brown spots on his feathers while a female is a wishy-washy mix of red and brown. Cardinals feed in trees as well as on the ground, and eat both seeds and berries. During the breeding season they can also be found eating insects, too.

Though cardinals are normally aggressive birds, and unwilling to share their food, Phoenix didn't mind if Sophie, the house sparrow, ate some seeds to on the other side of the feeder.

Well, to a limit.

This is Alfred. I can not say whether it is a he or she because both male and female have the same coloring and markings. Alfred seemed to fit, though, so Alfred he is. Blue jays, I have learned, are very noisy. They live in groups in the fall, and are known to attack a predator when they feel threatened. Though I was un-able to catch a picture of him on the feeder, he was there. As soon as I started taking pictures he flew off.

This is a male purple finch named Frito. He visits quite often, and is semi-friendly to the other birds. Frito is a gorgeous bird, and is starting to get used to people watching him. Male purple finches can be identified by their colorful chest and head. Where they got the name 'purple finches' is a mystery to me because the chest, head, and back of the male finch are red, not purple. Anyway, the female purple finches are mainly gray and brown.

Angie and Jenny are both house sparrows, along with Sophie who was mentioned before. These birds are practically fearless when facing humans, and as long as we don't venture to close, they will stay on the feeder during our talking. Both of these sparrows are females. The males have a black stripe that runs half-way down their chest, and auburn colored feathers rather than the grey and brown. They also have a grey patch on their heads.

I have a feeling these are fairly young sparrows. They have a younger look and are smaller next to the full grown sparrows who come by every once and a while.

This is Sheila and Sky. We don't see much of Sky because he stays in the trees most of the time, which is how he got his name. He stays as close to the sky as possible!

I was very surprised one day when I opened the creaky door that scares every animal off and saw Sheila sitting in the tree staring at me. I had the pleasure of taking pictures of the pretty girl.

Sheila is a very cute squirrel, and she has a very unique way of getting her food. Because of the bird feeders size, the squirrels have a very hard time eating out of it. So Sheila finds her own way to get what she wants.

Step 1: She climbs onto the top of the feeder.

Step 2: Sheila leans as far over as she can without falling off, tipping the bird feeder so that seed falls out.

Step 3: She climbs down the tree and eats the fallen seeds.

All in all, I've been very pleased with the animals that I have seen eating out of the bird feeder. I love sitting out on the porch with a good book and watching the birds fly down and have a party in the tree, where I have hung the bird feeder.

We're A Homeschool Family...

Here's us, well not really. But when I saw this video by Tom Hawkins, I couldn't help putting it on here. You'll probably see more of him on here, too. He's a hilarious Christian comedian.

Anyway, this reminded me so much of our family, there are 9 of us.

Enjoy!

Our Dizzy Bat Tournament

Yup. That's what we had, and it was a lot of fun. Thanks to Kim and Jason's great idea, we had a great hour of fun on Saturday. Well, I had better not spoil any more of the fun, everything is explained in this video I've made. Enjoy!

Oh, I accidentally in the credits said 'Themselve' instead of 'Themselves', but it would have taken it forever to upload again and I didn't feel like waiting.

Tether Ball, Lizards, and A Bit of Fun!

At first glance, your probably thinking "What on earth...", Yes. That is a monster, blow up tether ball, but I can tell you that that there tether ball is about the neatest outside toy we've ever gotten. My brothers found it fasinating when they learned that there was a game where the objective was to slam the ball into the opponants face, facinated and extremely pleased. Though I am not in any of the pictures, mainly because I was the one taking the pictures, I enjoy it also. A game where I can hit a ball as hard as I can? You can't even do that in volley ball!
My parents are fun to watch while they play that game, because my mom always laughing to hard to hit the ball and win herself, and my dad loves my mom too much to not let her win, which is why the game takes practicly 3 years to end. It's awesome.

And then there's the lizard. Riley, is his name. He's a really pretty lookin' lizard when he's green. Joe's green anole made a perfect picture as he stuck out his bright red dewflap.

Spencer's Surprise? Party

Well, it wasn't exactly a surprise because unfortunatly someone's tongue accidently slipped. Actually, he just didn't know it was a surprise. "Imagine his sirprese" - Count Olaf
Well, even though it wasn't exactly a big surprise for him, it was a LOT of fun! We played volley after Lizzy, Josh, Katie, and Danny showed up. We had played for about 20 min. when Christina, our head bopper, showed up. She joined the opposing team. We played for probably another 40 minutes when we were all called to sit down while Spencer recieved his birthday present, a sword, while Mr. Spencer's father did a ceremony type thing. It was really neat.
After that we went back to vball while the adults and younger kids got hot dogs. We played for a little while, and after the birthday boy's many plees, we decided to stop and get food. We got settled down and ate, making jokes about each other between mouthfuls of food. Everybody was giving their plates after they were done to Danny, I tried. He said he wouldn't take. So I walked up to him and dumped my full cup of ice-cold water on him and continued walking toward the house. He wasn't too far behind with a half-empty cup of lemonade. I broke into a run. I got to the house and put my plate in the trash. I peeked out the door. I didn't see him so I walked out. He was waiting for me around the side of the house, and as soon as he saw me he took off. I'm a faster runner then 'Old Dan', so it was quite impossible to catch me. I ran and sat by my mom, knowing that Danny wouldn't dare poor anything on me with the chance of getting it on my mom. I was wrong. He just very calmly poored it on my shoulder. Not only that, but he was an influence to his younger sisters, and they later soaked my back with a cup of water. Lovely.
We went back to volley ball after a few "circle warm ups", that's where we stand in a circle and see how many times we can hit the ball before it hit the ground. We didn't do that for very long. We started a game, and before long it was , Katie, Lizzy, David(Lizzy & Joshua's older brother), Victoria and I against Danny, Josh, Mr. Spencer's father, Mr. Christina's father, Spencer, Christina, and Bethany. Later my dad joined our team, and Matthew(Lizzy & Josh's older brother) joined the opposing team after Katie and Danny left, I think Spencer left too. It was 17-10, us with 17, when they said we had to take the net down, and that the next team who scores a point wins. Lizzy was serving. She served, and it went over the net. Josh hit...too hard. Out of bounds. We win! We all run in to get some water. By now it's almost dark outside, about 8:00pm, and everyone's leaving. We say goodbye to everyone, and leave.

It was tons of fun, and I definitely will plan to do something like that at my house soon.
Well, that's about it! We had fun, and laughter filled the air the entire time. Pictures to come soon!

Volley Ball - Part...Oh Forget IT!!

Well, it turns out that we're playing volley ball through the summer. Whoopie!
Today we played earlier then usual, 12-2 instead of 2-4. It was fun, and VERY hot. We had 10 people, so we divided up evenly, me being on a team with Alex, Christina, Victoria, Josh, and me, of course, and the other team was Katie, Lizzy, Kevin, Bethany, and Spencer. Pretty good teams, if you ask me. Kevin and Josh were team captains. After we got put in our positions, we served. I can't remember the exact score, or how exactly the game went, but I know that we won the game, switch sides, lost the next one, switched sides, and won the last one. After that we had a water/icecream break. The icecream was too sweet for me, so I only had a couple of bites. We went back outside after about 10 minutes, switched teams around, and did a single game to 25. Now it was Lizzy, Katie, Bethany, Josh, and I against Spencer, Victoria, Alex, Kevin, and Christina. We were on the side 'bad' side, the one that whoever was over there lost. With a rough beginning, it looked like that side was going to hold it's ground with its 'you can't win' streak. Half way through the game it was a sad score of 7-18, us losing. Coach called a time out and gave us some pointers, which apparently worked. We did 4 serves in a row, which got us up to 10-18. They served, it either went out of bounds or we hit it back, I can't remember. But anyhow, we got the ball. 9 more great serves, done by the fantabulous Katie, got us to 21-18. They're ball. They get to 22 and miss. Our ball! My serve. Now, just to let you know, I'm not a great server, and usually miss. I hit it...over the net! They hit it back and Katie and Joshua dive for it. One of them actually hit it over the net, but I don't know which one, but it doesn't matter because the other team didn't hit it back over. I served again...over! Again, over! Last time. If I get this ball over and they don't hit it back, we win! I close my eyes, and concentrate. I open my eyes, take a step forward, hit the ball...it goes over the net! After several attempts to get it back to us, the other team dropped the ball. We win!

It was fun, I enjoyed playing. In 2 weeks we'll meet back up again, I can't wait!

The Zip Line - Total Fun

Today we had a 4-H project to work on at our 4-H leaders house. She lives about 15 miles outside of town, and has a very nice country home. We went with some friends of ours who also picked up Ele and Korbin who live down the street from us. We get there a half and hour early and nobodies really there, so us kids go in the backyard and start messing around. They have a mini zip-line in their backyard which was about 20 feet long and 9 feet high at the starting point. So we're all messing around on it, and people keep showing up until we have about 20 kids lined up for this tiny zip-line. I went on it twice and was done, it was kinda boring and definitely wasn't worth the 10 minute wait. Eventually everybody got there and we did our project(we made a compost pile) and everything. Afterwards we were told that there was a surprise out in the barn.
The surprise was a zip-line that started in their barn loft, about 40 feet off the ground, and ended about 90 feet away. Of course I was at the end of the line, and just ahead of me was Joe(brother), Andrew, and Spencer(Andrew and Spence are brothers). We're chatting about random things, mostly about how high the zip-line is and making jokes about it and stuff. One of the people who was running the thing said that if you wanted to you could go without the harness. There were a couple of boys who were like "I can do it!". Guess how long that lasted. Those "tough boys" got up there and immediately said they wanted the harness. Wimps.
I watched Spencer and Joe go down. I eventually got up there and got the harness on. I grabbed the handle, looked down, and jumped. It was SO FUN!! It felt so good to have the breeze in your face, considering it was about 83 degrees and we had just put together a pile of compost.
Afterwards, I decided that I was going to go down that thing with no harness. I went back up, grabbed the handles, looked down, and hesitated. Then I went down. It was even more fun! I was the 2nd person, I think, to go down without a harness. After I did it, Spencer decided he was going to do it too. I followed him up the stairs and stood behind him in line. After a little waiting it was his turn. He stood up there and eventually went down. I followed suit.

After that I went and hung out with Victoria and Christina who were taking pictures of random stuff. That was fun!

It was a lot of fun, and we learned a lot about compost. Whoo. I had a good time.

Made a compost. Zipped the zip line. Hung with friends. Laughed a laugh.
All was good.

I'm Back!!!

Hey guys. Sorry, Internet was CRAZY expensive, a whole $13 dollars a day! Well, I'm back! I had a great time too! I hated riding to D.C., but it was ok riding back. I hadn't been on a airplane in 7 years, not to mention I had had popcorn and a small thing of nachos for dinner and nothing for breakfast or lunch by 2:00. I was VERY hungry! That huge piece of pizza I had couldn't have tasted better:)

(I will put a bunch of pics after this)
So, we went to the Museum of Natural History, that was cool.

The Smithsonian Zoo, my choice!

The Museum of Air and Space, my dad and I loved that one!

The American - Indian Museum, I didn't really like that one.

We saw the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument.

I think that's it! It was really fun. I got to ride a Subway for the first time. wee. It wasn't extremely fun, it was like "oh, I'm on a subway". Nothing special. Well, I will go into it later, I know you guys want pictures, so here you go!

Pictures of the Smithsonian Zoo:

I forgot what this is, but it looks like a giant hamster!

A Bible's View on Love

How many of you have heard of " The Fruit of the Spirit"? I think I was about 9 when I learned it, but I not only learned it, I memorized it. Here it is.

Galatians 5:22

The Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

I never really thought about it, all I thought was, "oh, I memorized it, so I get candy".
You may notice that the first is love. Now think about this... Love is patient, love is faithful, with it you have joy, self-control, kindness, goodness, and gentleness. But, just because you have love does not mean that every morning you wake up and your happy and full of joy and life is perfect. You will still have hard times and life will not be perfect, but love is the root of all these things.

Here is 1 Corinthians 13 4-8
Love is patient. Love is kind. Love isn't jealous. It doesn't sing its own praises. It isn't arrogant. It isn't rude. It doesn't think about itself. It isn't irritable. It doesn't keep track of wrongs. It isn't happy when injustice is done, but it is happy with the truth. Love never stops being patient, never stops believing, never stops hoping, never gives up.
Love never comes to an end.

See how it has many of the Fruits in this one verse. Peace - it isn't happy when injustice is done. Patience and Self-control - it is and never will stop being patient. Faith - it never stops believing. Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness- it isn't rude; it is kind.

I never really saw it as something like that. I never put two and two together. Love is what we should try to live for, it is perfect. God is love, pure love. He does not easily anger, He is patient, He is kind, He is unhappy when injustice is done.

He wrote those verses to remind us of this - If our goal in life is to try to try our best to be like God, then we should try to love as He loves us, His love is perfect.
